Gerhard Venter

Gerhard Venter used to pray, “Lord, please put me in a position where I can write full-time.” So God gave him chronic back pain, which forced him to quit his job; helped him complete a masters degree in theology at Emory University in Atlanta; relocated him to a small house in the Northeast Georgia mountains; surrounded him with animals and grandchildren; and said, “Okay. Now write.”
Not knowing what else to do, he wrote about chronic pain. “Slay Your Pain Giant,” first published in 2012 as “Through Pain to Victory,” was the result. The book was part of how he was delivered from the never-ending pain, and it has always been his prayer that the book helped others too. Gerhard was born and educated in South Africa and came to the United States with his family in 1996. He is a successful radio scriptwriter and has published several short stories in national magazines. He wrote and co-wrote four stage plays that were successfully performed.
In the meantime, the small adventures of a small farm never cease. Imagine working on a novel with an angry goat battering at the front door.

Roll Your Rock

Roll Your Rock

The mythological character Sysiphus was condemned to roll a heavy rock up a steep hill. Every time he got to the top of the hill, his strength would give out and the rock would roll right back down to the bottom. Doesn’t life feel like this sometimes? That rock is often not taken away from us, because we live in a world that is full of sin and evil. Mostly we simply don't know why the burden was placed upon uis. But Christians know that God can lend you His strength when yours is gone. In this book I have collected 100 devotions that — and this is my prayer — could make that heavy burden a little bit lighter.

Turn to God for strength and inspiration by meditating on His Word and praying.

When you're ready, He will take your rock away.

Arrow of God

Arrow of God

This is a collection of theological essays about the people who, through the ages, have woven the rich tapestry of what we believe today. I write about Job's rebellion against God; the countless miles traveled by Paul and his companions; Augustine's struggle against the Donatists — about a host of theologians, reformers, and reprobates who formed our spiritual world.

10 Pebbles for a Sling

10 Pebbles for a Sling

In the Bible story of how the young shepherd boy David killed Goliath, the Philistine Giant, we learn that David selected five pebbles to put in his pouch. He took one of them, put it in his sling, swung his sling, and brought the giant down.
We all face giants in our life. Like Goliath, they have names — I have faced a brute named Chronic Pain; you may be up against a particularly nasty one called Cancer; others face Loneliness, Addiction, Financial Troubles, Family Discord, Divorce, Loss of a Loved One — the list of Philistines goes on and on. The one as nasty as the next.
So God arms us with prayer.
Each sincere prayer we pray is like one of David’s pebbles.
I pray that these ten short devotions will help you in your ongoing struggle to overcome the giant in your life.

"God arms us with prayer."

Die eerste was steeds speurwerk.
